Course Description
​

This first aid course provides comprehensive instruction and hands-on training in accordance with the guidelines set by the Australian Resuscitation Council and other national clinical bodies. Participants will learn to swiftly recognize emergencies and deliver appropriate first aid for sudden illnesses or injuries. The course covers the essential skills and knowledge needed to provide first aid in various settings, including community and workplace environments such as NDIS, healthcare, construction, and trades. It is ideal for both workplace participants and members of the public seeking thorough first aid training.

The curriculum includes assessing the injured person, ensuring safety, contacting emergency services, and utilizing available resources for first aid. Key topics include CPR, defibrillator use, administering autoinjectors for anaphylaxis, providing asthma medication, assisting choking victims, and immobilizing for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains. It also covers managing non-life-threatening bleeding and shock.

Participants will gain an understanding of anatomy and physiology, learn the differences between adult, child, and infant CPR techniques, understand the chain of survival, document incidents, review incidents to enhance skills and response times, recognize psychological impacts, and seek help when necessary.

Entry Requirements

​

  • Participants must be at least 18 years old.

  • Complete the enrolment form and provide a Unique Student Identifier
    (USI).

  • Successfully completed the Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) test.

  • Have the physical and mental capacity to perform at least 2 minutes of
    CPR on a manikin on the floor.

Training Overview
​
  • First Aid Techniques and Equipment: Receive instruction on first aid methods, including CPR, and learn how to use manikins and AEDs.

  • Practical Demonstrations and Risk Management: Participate in hands-on first aid practice, including CPR, and develop skills in risk management.

  • Incident Communication and Review: Report incident details accurately, follow procedures, maintain privacy, recognize psychological impacts, and contribute to incident reviews.

  • Assessment and Certification: Complete assessments to demonstrate first aid competence, including CPR, and understand certification and refresher requirements.

Course Outcome

​

Emergency Response:

  • Recognise and assess emergencies.

  • Ensure safety for all involved.

  • Identify the need for first aid.

  • Seek emergency assistance.

First Aid Procedures:

  • Perform CPR as per ARC guidelines.

  • Provide first aid following established principles.

  • Obtain consent and use available resources.

  • Operate first aid equipment correctly.

  • Monitor and respond to casualty’s condition.

Communication:

  • Convey incident details to emergency services.

  • Report and document incidents accurately.

  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality.

Incident Review:

  • Recognise psychological impacts and seek help.

  • Participate in reviewing the first aid response.

Pathways
​

Students who successfully complete this unit of competency will be awarded a statement of attainment. Upon completion of this unit of competency, employment pathways include possible job titles such as first aider.

Students completing this unit of competency may decide to undertake additional studies such as HLTAID010, which provides essential emergency life support; HLTAID012, which provides first Aid in an education and care setting; or HLTAID014, which provides Advanced First Aid.

Students must complete refresher courses every 3 Years as the Australian Resuscitation Council mandates.
